It's 1960. Rock and roll is cool and the civil rights movement is heating up.
Can a small town girl catch the cool and stand the heat? College is just a bump in the road for twenty-year-old Melanie Sedlak who dreams of stardom as a rock and roll drummer. When a chance meeting brings Moses Carter, a black student from Flint, into her life, Melanie is intrigued with the idea of being friends with a Negro—especially a tall, dark, charming man like Moe.
Everyone whispers about them and some people are openly hostile. As Melanie's awareness of racial prejudice grows, she wonders if she's a racist, too. Why does Moe keep pushing her away? Is it because of his involvement with the new civil rights group on campus?
Music remains Melanie's passion, but problems with her fledgling band challenge her plans.
When things heat up and Moe is in trouble, Melanie must make a decision. Can she cross the color line and orchestrate new dreams? Barbara Vortman grew up in rural Michigan. Always a lover of learning and new experiences, she has been a teacher of small children and older adults, a social services worker, a volunteer, and a writer. Her first job as a teen was in a laundromat and she is still proficient at folding fitted sheets.
In her most recent employment, she provided information and support to grandparents raising their grandchildren. Her all-time favorite occupation (most challenging and most rewarding) has been Mom and Grandma.
Barbara lives in Michigan with her husband, Jeff. She enjoys travel and spending time with friends. She loves music (especially early rock and roll) but, unlike the characters in her novels, the only instrument she can play is the radio. Barbara has published three novels: Don't Be Cruel, Blowin' In The Wind, and Child of Mine.
