Caroline Batzer is puzzled then angry when her best friend makes it clear she no longer wants her around. Sarah Leigh was once a big part of Caroline’s life, but after months of being snubbed and opposed at every turn Caroline snaps, creating a scene with Sarah that’s soon reported all over their tiny northern Lower Michigan town. Embarrassed and humiliated, she imagines the whispers: Can you believe it? They used to be such good friends!

The harsh words she spoke in public come back to haunt Caroline when Sarah goes missing. The police believe she’s been drowned in a local lake, and at least some of them think Caroline is responsible. Worse, the real culprits are now after her. It seems to have something to do with Bay View, a community near Petoskey known for lovely Victorian homes. It's the setting for a novel Caroline once wrote, and the plot revolves around burglaries committed there.

When the men responsible for Sarah's disappearance come after her, Caroline is chased through woods, lakes, and even a sinkhole. She has no idea why she's their quarry, but she comes to see that Sarah is responsible for the whole calamity. Still, Caroline has no time to worry about the death of their old friendship. She faces the probability of real death in stark, remote Michigan woods, all because somebody doesn't like Sarah Leigh.

Peg Herring

Peg Herring reads, writes, and loves mysteries. She is the author of several stand-alones and three series: the Simon & Elizabeth Mysteries (historical), the Dead Detective Mysteries (mildly paranormal), and the Loser Mysteries (contemporary suspense). Peg loves travel, both in the States and abroad, and she and her husband of many years can often be found camping with the world's (almost) oldest cat Trouble, who often lives up to her name. These days Peg also answers to Maggie Pill, the author of the Sleuth Sisters Mysteries. If you have sisters, if you know sisters, you'll love these books!
