"Smile!" Click. Flash. Mrs. Levine's fifth grade students are learning about photography and about George Eastman, the founder of Eastman Kodak Co. They progress from one misadventure to another as they experience the different stages of photography from sun prints to film.

When they take a field trip to George Eastman's home, things turn serious. Steven, a teenage chaperone and Lamar's brother, is accused of stealing an irreplaceable candlestick.

Mrs. Levine leads the students in finding the real thief by teaching them the steps involved in solving a mystery. Photography becomes a metaphor for life as white develops into black and black develops into white, and a photograph becomes instrumental in solving the mystery.
