The depression era was hard on families financially. Earning a living caused many fathers to choose jobs in cities far away from their family Everyone struggled with lack of necessities.

Add to that, the hypocrisies of Christian neighbors and employers for one family in small town Georgia, and that family is torn-apart. Dismissed from a job that provided the only income and evicted from their home branded each family member for the rest of their lives. The youngest daughter, Kathryn, became so damaged by this uprooting that it affected her relationships with everyone outside her family. Her feeling of unworthiness colored every thought and decision she made. However, she maintained her love for music, grew into a caring, loving wife and mother, but was always skeptical of others' motives and carried a hidden shame the rest of her life.

This story moves between Kathryn's teenage years, through her marriage and the last years of her life and contrasts her relationship with her adult daughter and son-in-law as they face a health issue while caring for her. She maintains her wry sense of humor, love of music, and love for her children and grandchildren and ultimately finds peace.
