Preacher-fugitive from his Kansas congregation and his faith, Ed returns to the Bitterroot Mountains, sets up camp and takes a new identity above the Clark Fork River. No accusations. No temptations. No abuse. He keeps to himself, makes camp safe from bears and rain, but his inner life turns disturbing. With unexpected help from visitors and a woman whose hot tub sits below his cliff, Ed discovers a new kind of spirituality as he confronts his past and seeks to find a home with Nature and himself.

Montana's flora and fauna come alive in this fiction story taking place in mountain beauty and energy . The small community where Ed sets up camp gives him opportunity to escape and grapple with his addictive demons. He takes advantage of the local scramble for a living, giving the reader a glimpse of small-town economics. His life on the side of a mountain thins the veil between staying in his head and coming to grips with what's in his heart.

Readers are encouraged to go beyond Ed's survival tactics, enjoy his sense of humor, and see what makes him--and us--tick as he unlocks a few of his logic-tight compartments.

About Virginia Fortner (Hawaii Author)

Virginia Fortner

Virginia Fortner, following an urge to express herself since she began to print, has published essays, poetry, fiction, and children’s stories, and one dissertation. Mostly retired, she met with Montana Writers after being part of Kansas City Writers for many years. Now she puts pen to paper with Hawi folks to write essays, articles, memoirs, poems, and fiction. Kohala actors recently presented one of her 10-minute plays. Virginia is presently co-writing a surfboard shaper’s adventurers and a WWI German showgirl’s life. That leaves a little time for her memoirs revisiting “1949ers” as her family pulled a trailer house across 26 states. www.vfortner.wordpress describes more wanderlust as she taught ESL in China, Saudi Arabia, and Malaysia. Her novel, At the Edge, is at North Kohola Library, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon.com.
