England, 1447, disaster befalls Aiden Connal as a band of men lay murderous waste to his land and the only woman he has ever loved. He leaves the world he knows in pursuit of his wife’s murderers who have journeyed to France for the Duke of York’s war. After exacting his revenge, Aiden continues on to Rome, adrift in a world that no longer wants him.

On reaching Rome, he encounters the Aetius Corp, the Roman Army’s fiercest fighters. Their ethos fills a void in him that even he does not even understand, and he falls into their way of life, joining them in their fight to defend a ravaged Constantinople from the Ottomans. They do not have a prayer of succeeding against their foe, but they face them with stubborn courage and discover prayers are often answered in unexpected ways.
