Only known as Cassie until her birth documents show otherwise, Cassie Thorngate sets out to find her father and learn why she was left an orphan in a parsonage for eighteen years. Stowing away on her father's ship against his wishes, and that of the grandmother and aunt she never knew, she worked alongside the crew as the cabin boy and ship's steward until two passengers saw through her disguise as a young lad and molested her.

Robert (Rob) MacDonald is the first mate aboard the Sea Hawk when his captain learned he had a daughter and found he was more than interested in her. When Cassie was molested, he sought her father's permission to marry.

Cassie's battle with her fears and people in general leave her traumatized and facing an uncertain future. When battles with pirates and the French due to the Seven Year's War threaten to overwhelm her, Cassie must learn to trust someone. Can Cassie accept the love offered to her and come to terms with what happened?
