THE PURPLE GRASSHOPPER by Hannah Qizilbash (Nodhi Stories, 2020) a thoughtful and engaging children’s book that encourages young readers to explore topics of diversity, inclusion, self-love, and friendship through the character of a quirky, big-spirited purple grasshopper.

Inspired by the impromptu bedtime story Qizilbash created for her own children—four-year-old twin daughters who were struggling with questions of their own uniqueness and self-acceptance—THE PURPLE GRASSHOPPER follows the journey of one young grasshopper as she discovers she’s different from her peers, tries and fails to hide who she truly is, faces a community who doesn’t quite understand her, and ultimately arrives at a place of self-celebration and friendship. Written for 3-7 year-olds, THE PURPLE GRASSHOPPER is on a mission to make the world a more inclusive place by introducing early, accessible conversations about diversity, exclusion, being your authentic self, and the importance of a support system—in a fun, colorful way! Children and parents alike will love the values of this dynamic story and how it encourages children to be true to who they are.
